Bang on makeup trends for autumn and how to get it right

Love it or hate it, autumn is here. Secretly I love it, mostly because I can hide my biscuit obsession under a few more layers of clothes. But it’s also the cue to switch to a more autumnal look with my makeup. I know, any excuse to go shopping. What’s a girl to do but follow her natural instincts? Blog2-LeadPic2

Out with the old, in with the new

If it wasn’t for so many fab beauty trends, I’d obviously make do with my existing makeup haul. But we all know it has a shelf-life and now is as good a time as any to clear out your makeup bag. You may just find some forgotten favourites that are back in season. Anyway, it would be rude not to buy a few key products to stay on-trend and look catwalk-hot. Well, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.

Smokin’ hot eyes

Kim Kardashian is a big fan of sexy, smoky eyes and this statement look is great for a night out or party, especially in metallic purple or bronze. This autumn smudgy, smoky eyes are celebrated and not berated. So if you’re anything like me, rubbing your eyes when you’re all glammed up will only add to the effect. I love to use L'Oreal Paris Color Riche Quad - E5 Incredible Grey to create this killer look with their Infallible Eyeliner 301 Night Day Black smudged below the eye.

Another classic that’s very much back on the scene, is winged eyeliner. Think Alexa Chung and Angelina Jolie for inspiration. I’m now an expert at applying the feline flick thanks to a little help from our therapist and the perfect product for the job. And that would be L'Oreal Paris Superliner Blackbuster Intense Black because it has a pointed tip that makes following your eyelid a cinch. Put it like this, if I can pull it off, anyone can. But if you’re more confident with a brush, try their Super Liner Gel Intenza - 01 Pure Black instead.

Nude eyes are also on-trend and perfect for daytime or those days when you’re short on time or motivation. I know, shame on me. Just a sweep of mascara and a bold, deep berry on the lips and I’m good to go.

I love the effect of false eyelashes, but I don’t love poking myself in the eye constantly as I try to apply them. And don’t get me started on the horrified looks I’ve had from guys when my eyelashes head south on a night out. As this beauty fad is still hot for autumn, I’ll be relying on my fave mascara, Maybelline Volum' Express Mascara 9.5ml Colossal CAT EYES, to achieve the false eyelash effect instead. Oh and also my trusty eyelash curlers. Did you know if you heat them up with your hairdryer then apply to your eyelashes; they will keep that curl for longer? The result, a beautiful wide-eyed look that works well with both smoky eyes and winged eyeliner.

Eyebrow raising

You might want to sit down for the next key trend. Bold eyebrows are big this season, but before you run a mile, we’re not talking mono-brows. No, but we are talking a more natural, less sculpted brow than past seasons. Think supermodel Cara Delevingne. On the up side, that’s less time spent plucking, waxing or threading. Instead, I’ll be embracing my brows and making them more prominent, but still well groomed. I do have standards you know. I like to add definition by darkening them with a pencil or powder. Bold eyebrows work well with smoky or nude eyes, as well as with winged eyeliner.

Lip smacking colour shot

This autumn lips take on the wine stained look, but prettier. I’m okay then. Gorgeous matte reds and deep berry tones should feature on your pout and red wine in your glass. Okay, so the latter is optional, but these dark autumnal shades are a must and I’m already hooked. Stay on-trend with strong, natural brows and mix with either wine stained lips and nude eyes, or smoky eyes and nude lips. Or just go for it with bold eyes, brows and lips. Knock yourself out, honey.
